Dental crowns, also known as "dental caps" or "tooth caps," are dental restorations that cover and encase the tooth to which they are attached. Dentists use dental crowns to repair broken or decayed teeth, strengthen teeth, and improve the cosmetic appearance of teeth. Placing a dental crown on a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy. Crowns can be made of porcelain (a dental ceramic), metal (a gold or other metal alloy), or a combination of the two. Dental crowns can also be referred to as "dental caps" or "tooth caps." Because a cemented dental crown essentially becomes the new outer surface of the tooth, it is easy to see how crown placement can restore a tooth to its original shape. Dental crowns are routinely made for teeth that have broken, worn excessively, or had large portions destroyed by tooth decay, as well as for teeth treated with root canal treatment, as the inside of teeth becomes slightly weaker than healthy teeth. Cosmetic fillings are not always an option when teeth have been severely damaged by decay or wear. In these cases, the tooth can be saved and protected with a crown or cap. Crowns can also be used on either side of a gap to build a bridge to replace one or more missing teeth without using implants.
